Early Mornin' Rain
02:40
|
|||
In the early mornin' rain
With a dollar in my hand
And an aching in my heart
And my pockets full of sand
I'm a long ways from home
And I missed my loved one so
In the early mornin' rain
With no place to go
Out on runway number nine
Big seven-o-seven set to go
Well I'm stuck here on the ground
Where the cold winds blow
The liquor tasted good
And the women all were fast
There she goes my friend
She'll be rolling down at last
Hear the mighty engines roar
See the silver bird on high
She's away and westward bound
High above the clouds she'll fly
Where the mornin' rain don't fall
And the sun always shines
She'll be flying over my home
In about three hours time
This ol' airport's got me down
It's no earthly good to me
Cause I'm stuck here on the ground
As cold and drunk as I might be
You can't jump a big jet plane
Like you can an ol' freight train
So I'd best be on my way
In the early mornin' rain
You can't jump a big jet plane
Like you can an ol' freight train
So I best be on my way
In the early mornin' rain

The Blind Harper
04:40
|
|||
Have you heard the tale of the blind harper,
How he lived in Lochmaben town,
And he went down to fair England,
To steal King Henry’s wanton Brown.
But first he went unto his wife,
With all the speed that he could show,
“This work,” he says, “will never go well,
Without the help of your good grey mare.”
Says she, “You take the good grey mare,
That'll run o’er hills both low and high,
And sit you on the grey mare's back
And leave your foal at home with me.”
Then he was up to England gone,
Even as fast as go could he,
And when he got to Carlisle gates
Who should be there but King Henry?
“Oh, come in, come in you blind harper,
And of your music let us hear.”
And, "By my sooth," said the blind harper,
“I’d rather have stabling for my mare.”
So the king he looked over his left shoulder
And said unto his serving groom,
“Take the poor blind harper’s mare,
And put her beside me wanton brown.”
So the harper harped and then he sang,
Till all the lords were on the floor.
So sweet was the music that he let them hear
They forgot all about the stable door.
And still he harped and still he sang
Till he charmed them all so fast asleep,
He took off his big heavy shoes,
And quietly down the stairs did creep.
He crept up to that stable door,
With tread as light as light could be,
He tied his halter round the mare,
To the wanton brown o' King Henry.
Then he loosed them out the King's back gates
And the mare was so swift and she ne'er did brae
And she was at Lochmaben town
Three long hours before the day.
And in the morn at broad daylight
When they had ended all their cheer,
Behold the wanton brown was gone,
And likewise the poor blind harper’s mare.
“Oh, alas, alas,” cries the blind harper,
“It's ever and alas that I've come here,
In Scotland I’ve lost me a little colt foal,
In England they've stolen me old grey mare.”
“Oh, hold your tongue,” cried King Henry,
“And of your music let us hear."
"And well paid shall your colt foal be
And you shall get a far better mare."
So the harper harped and then he sang
So sweet was the music that he let them hear.
He's paid for a foal that he never had lost
And three times over for the good grey mare.
And still he harped and still he sang
So sweet was the music that he let them hear.
He's paid for a foal that he never had lost
And three times over for the good grey mare.

The Water Is Wide
02:41
|
|||
The water is wide, I cannot get o'er
And neither have I wings to fly
Give me a boat that'll carry two
And both shall row, my love and I
There is a ship and she sails the sea
She's loaded deep as deep can be
But not so deep as the love I'm in
I know not if I sink or swim
I leaned my back up against some oak
Thinking that she was a trusty tree
But first she bended and then she broke
And so did my false love to me
O love is handsome and love is kind
And love's a jewel while it is new
But love grows old and waxes cold
And fades away like morning dew
And fades away like morning dew

Buddha of the Backwoods
03:39
|
|||
Oh, I seen trouble for all of my days
Oh, I seen trouble in this wide world
Oh, I seen trouble for all of my days
But I just sit and let it be
Oh, I just sit and meditate
Upon the way things come to be
For we depend upon each other
Ain't nothing that stands apart
Oh, I felt sorrow come gripping me
And in sorrow this world abounds
Oh, I felt sorrow come gripping me
But I just sit and let it be
I just sit and meditate
Upon the way things come to be
For we depend upon each other
Ain't nothing that stands apart
Oh, I felt anger down in my bones
And that anger it go down deep
Oh, I felt anger down in my bones
But I just sit and let it be
Oh, I just sit and meditate
Upon the way things come to be
For we depend upon each other
Ain't nothing that stands apart
Oh, who am I you might say
To sit and think in this kind of way
Oh, who am I you might say
Well, I'm the man 'neath the Bodhi tree
Where I just sit and meditate
Upon the way things come to be
For we depend upon each other
Ain't nothing that stands apart
Oh, I seen trouble in this wide world
I seen trouble for all of my days
Oh, I seen trouble in this wide world
But I just sit and let it be
Oh, I just sit and meditate
Upon the way things come to be
For we depend upon each other
Ain't nothing that stands apart
Oh, I just sit and meditate
Upon the way things come to be
For we depend upon each other
Ain't nothing that stands apart

In Tall Buildings
02:47
|
|||
One day my baby when I am a man
And others have taught me
The things that they can
They'll sell me a suit
And cut off my hair
And send me to work in tall buildings
So it's goodbye to the sunshine
Goodbye to the dew
And goodbye to the flowers
And goodbye to you
I'm off to the subway
I must not be late
For I’m going to work in tall buildings
And when I’ve retired
My life is my own
I've made all the payments
It's time to go home
And wonder what happened
Betwixt and between
When I went to work in tall buildings
So it's goodbye to the sunshine
Goodbye to the dew
And goodbye to the flowers
And goodbye to you
I'm off to the subway
I must not be late
For I’m going to work in tall buildings
So it's goodbye to the sunshine
Goodbye to the dew
And goodbye to the flowers
And goodbye to you
I'm off to the subway
I must not be late
For I’m going to work in tall buildings

Courting is a Pleasure
03:20
|
|||
Oh, courting is a pleasure
Between my love and I;
And it's down in yon green valley
I would meet her by and by.
And it's down in yon green valley
She was my heart's delight:
"Oh, Molly, lovely Molly,
I would stay till dawn's bright light."
But going to church last Sunday,
My true love she passed me by.
Well I knew her mind was altered
By the roving of her eye.
Well I knew her mind was altered
To a lad of high degree:
"Oh, Molly, lovely Molly,
Your looks have wounded me."
Then up came her love Willy
With a bottle in his hand,
Saying, "Drink this, lovely Molly,
For our love will never stand."
Saying, "Drink this, lovely Molly,
Let the bottle flask go free.
Ten guineas I'll wager,
That married we ne'er shall be."
So, never marry a fair young maid
With a dark and a roving eye.
Just you kiss her and you embrace her,
Never tell her the reason why.
Just you kiss her and you embrace her
Till you cause her heart to yield;
For a faint-hearted soldier
Will never gain the field.
So farewell, Ballymonie
Likewise the sweet Bann shore.
And farewell unto McCusky braes,
Never shall I see thee more.
Amerikay lies that way,
That land I will go see;
And may all bad luck attend the one
Who parted my love and me.
And may all bad luck attend the one
Who parted my love and me.

Your Fair Face
02:51
|
|||
It's your fair face
I ne'er again shall see
For I am bound for Gallipoli
And your fair face
I ne'er again shall see
For on those shores, I surely must be
But if I had my way
With you I'd stay
And enjoy this sumptuous view
Of God's own country
But there is war
Across the sea
And where Britain goes, so my dear do we
For loyal subjects are the kiwi
So your fair face
I ne'er again shall see
For I am bound for Gallipoli
And your fair face
I ne'er again shall see
For I must fight
For King and country
I think of you
But right on cue
The canons shout and roar
And you are there no more
My blood spills out
My comrades shout
The echoes stay and ring
But I am departing
So your fair face
I ne'er again shall see
For I am bound for Gallipoli
And your fair face
I ne'er again shall see
For a soldier I must be

The Two Magicians
03:16
|
|||
The lady stood at her own front door
As straight as a willow wand
And by there came a lusty smith
With a hammer in his hand
Saying bide, lady, bide
There's nowhere you can hide
For the lusty smith will be your love
And he will lay your pride
Well may you dress you lady fair
All in your robes of red
But come tomorrow at this same time
I'll have your maidenhead
Bide, lady, bide
There's nowhere you can hide
For the lusty smith will be your love
And he will lay your pride
Away, away you coal blacksmith
Would you do me this wrong?
To think to have me maidenhead
That I have kept so long
I'd rather I was dead and cold
And me body laid in the grave
Than a lusty, dusty coal blacksmith
Me maidenhead should have
So the lady she held up her hand
And swore upon her soul
She never would be the blacksmith's love
For all of a box of gold
But the blacksmith he held up his hand
And swore upon the mass
I'll have you for me love me girl
For the half of that or less
Bide, lady, bide
There's nowhere you can hide
For the lusty smith will be your love
And he will lay your pride
So she became a little dove
A flying in the air
But he became an old cock pigeon
And they flew pair and pair
Bide, lady, bide
There's nowhere you can hide
For the lusty smith will be your love
And he will lay your pride
So she became a little hare
A running on the plain
But he became a greyhound dog
And fetched her back again
Bide, lady, bide
There's nowhere you can hide
For the lusty smith will be your love
And he will lay your pride
So she became a big great mare
As dark as the night was black
But he became a golden saddle
And clung unto her back
Bide, lady, bide
There's nowhere you can hide
For the lusty smith will be your love
And he will lay your pride
So she went into her bedroom
And she became a bed
But he became a green coverlet
And stole her maidenhead
And was she woe, he held her so
And still he bade her bide
The blacksmith he became her love
And he pulled down her pride
Bide, lady, bide
There's nowhere you can hide
For the lusty smith will be your love
And he will lay your pride
Bide, lady, bide
There's nowhere you can hide
For the lusty smith will be your love
And he will lay your pride

Swallow Song
02:38
|
|||
Fly swallow fly
So far from me
Fly swallow fly
That I'm longing to see
Fly swallow fly
In autumn gold
Fly swallow fly
Away in the cold
When you leave me without the sun
It feels like I'm without anyone
I want to listen and hear your song
But you leave me waitin' so very long
Fly swallow fly
So far from me
Fly swallow fly
That I'm longing to see
Fly swallow fly
I glimpse your wing
Fly swallow fly
And start to sing
Fearin' your reasons not knowing the truth
I think that you leave me because I'm uncouth
But it's just the seasons changin' their way
That's why you leave around about may
Fly swallow fly
Come back for the spring
Fly swallow fly
And start to sing
Fly swallow fly
You lighten my day
Fly swallow fly
That's all I can say
Fly swallow fly
Come back for the spring
Fly swallow fly
And start to sing
Fly swallow fly
You lighten my day
Fly swallow fly
That's all I can say
Fly swallow fly
You lighten my day
Fly swallow fly
That's all I can say

The Elfin Knight
04:16
|
|||
The elfin knight sits on yon hill
Blow blow blow winds blow
He blows his horn both loud and shrill
The winds have blown away his woe
He blows it east, he blows it west
Blow blow blow winds blow
He blows it where he liketh best
The winds have blown away his woe
I wish that horn-blower I kissed
Blow blow blow winds blow
For in my soft arms, he is missed
The winds have blown away his woe
No sooner these words had she said
Blow blow blow winds blow
Than the knight came to her in her bed
The winds have blown away his woe
A very young maid thou be
Blow blow blow winds blow
So married to you I can nae be
The winds have blown away his woe
But I have a sister younger than I
Blow blow blow winds blow
And she was married by and by
The winds have blown away his woe
If married to you I must be
Blow blow blow winds blow
Then a curtsy you must do for me
The winds have blown away his woe
Name thy price my fair knight
Blow blow blow winds blow
For in my soft heart you must write
The winds have blown away his woe
Well I have an acre of good fey land
Blow blow blow winds blow
Which lyeth low on yon sea sand
The winds have blown away his woe
I'll need you to plow it with one small thorn
Blow blow blow winds blow
And your work must be done before the morn
The winds have blown away his woe
So he went and waited o'er the sea
Blow blow blow winds blow
But her fair face he ne'er again did see
The winds have blown away his woe
The elfin knight sits on yon hill
Blow blow blow winds blow
He blows his horn both loud and shrill
The winds have blown away his woe

Gum Tree Canoe
02:58
|
|||
On the tom big bee river so bright I was born
In a hut made of husks of the tall yellow corn
It was there I first spied my Julia so true
And I rowed her about in my gum tree canoe
Singing row away row o’er the waters so blue
Like a feather we’ll float in our gum tree canoe
Singing row away row o’er the waters so blue
Like a feather we’ll float in our gum tree canoe
All day in the fields of soft cotton I’d hoe
And I'd think of my Julia and sing as I'd go
I’d catch her a bird with a wing of true blue
And at night sail around in my gum tree canoe
Singing row away row o’er the waters so blue
Like a feather we’ll float in our gum tree canoe
Singing row away row o’er the waters so blue
Like a feather we’ll float in our gum tree canoe
With my hands on my banjo and a toe on the oar
I'd sing to the sound of the river’s soft roar
While the bright stars shone down on my Julia so true
And they danced in her eyes on my gum tree canoe
Singing row away row o’er the waters so blue
Like a feather we’ll float in our gum tree canoe
Singing row away row o’er the waters so blue
Like a feather we’ll float in our gum tree canoe
One day the old river took us so far away
That we couldn’t get back, so we thought we’d just stay
We spied us a ship with a flag of true blue
And it took us in tow in our gum tree canoe
Singing row away row o’er the waters so blue
Like a feather we’ll float in our gum tree canoe
Singing row away row o’er the waters so blue
Like a feather we’ll float in our gum tree canoe
Singing row away row o’er the waters so blue
Like a feather we’ll float in our gum tree canoe
Singing row away row o’er the waters so blue
Like a feather we’ll float in our gum tree canoe

Hang Me, Oh Hang Me
03:00
|
|||
Hang me, oh hang me
I'll be dead and gone
Hang me, oh hang me
I'll be dead and gone
Well, I wouldn't mind the hangin'
But the layin' in the grave so long, poor boy
I've been all around this world
Been all around Cape Girardeau
Parts of Arkansas
All around Cape Girardeau
Parts of Arkansas
Well, I've been so goddamn hungry
I could hide behind a straw, poor boy
I've been all around this world
I went up on the mountain
There I made my stand
I went up on the mountain
There I made my stand
With a rifle on my shoulder,
And a dagger in my hand, poor boy
I've been all around this world
Put the rope around my neck
Hung me up so high
Put the rope around my neck
Hung me up so high
The last words I heard him say
Won't be long now for you die, poor boy
I've been all around this world
So hang me, oh hang me
I'll be dead and gone
Hang me, oh hang me
I'll be dead and gone
Well, I wouldn't mind the hangin'
But the layin' in the grave so long, poor boy
I've been all around this world

You can hear the whistle blow
A hundred miles
You can hear the whistle blow
A hundred miles
Down By The Salley Gardens:
Down by the salley gardens
My love and I did meet;
She passed the salley gardens
With little snow-white feet.
She bid me take love easy,
As the leaves grow on the tree;
But I, being young and foolish,
With her would not agree.
In a field by the river
My love and I did stand,
And on my leading shoulder
She laid her snow-white hand.
She bid me take life easy,
As the grass grows on the weirs;
But I was young and foolish,
And now am full of tears.
Gentle On My Mind:
It's knowing that your door is always open
And your path is free to walk
That makes me tend to leave my sleeping bag
Rolled up and stashed behind your couch
And it's knowing I'm not shackled
By forgotten words and bonds
And the ink stains that have dried upon some lines
That keeps you in the back-roads
By the rivers of my memory
That keeps you ever
Gentle on my mind
It's not clinging to the rocks and ivy
Planted on their columns now that binds me
Or something that somebody said
Because they thought we fit together walking
It's knowing that the world will not be cursing or forgiving
When I walk along some rail-road track and find
That your still there on the back-roads, by the rivers of my memory
And for hours your just gentle on my mind
Oh the wheatfields, and the clotheslines
And the junkyards, and the highways
Come between us
Or some other woman crying to her mother
Cause she turned and I was gone
Oh I still might run in silence
Tears of joy might stain my face
And the summer sun might burn me till I'm blind
But not to where I cannot see you walking on the backroads
By the rivers flowing gentle on my mind
I pull my cup of soup from a gurgling, cracking, cauldron in some train yard
My beard a roughening coal pile, and a dirty hat pulled low across my face
Through cupped hands, round the tin can, I pretend I hold you to my breast and find
That you're still there on the backroads, by the rivers of my memory, ever smiling
Ever gentle on my mind
